After admiring the Taj Mahal, head over to Agra Fort. This imposing fort was built by Emperor Akbar and is an excellent example of Mughal architecture. Next, pay a visit to Fatehpur Sikri, a UNESCO World Heritage site that was once the capital of the Mughal Empire. Be sure to see the Diwan-i-Khas (the hall of private audiences) and Panch Mahal (the five-story palace).

One Day Trip to Agra

The Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal is one of the world’s most iconic and photogenic buildings. Situated in Agra, India, the Taj Mahal was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his late wife Mumtaz Mahal. The stunning white marble structure is adorned with intricate Islamic carvings and is set against the backdrop of the river Yamuna.

A visit to the Taj Mahal is a must-do when in Agra and can easily be done in a day trip from Delhi. Our top tips for visiting the Taj Mahal are to arrive early to avoid the crowds, take plenty of water as it can get hot, and make sure to dress modestly (cover your shoulders and knees) out of respect for the site’s religious significance.

After exploring the Taj Mahal, head to Agra Fort which is just a short drive away. This imposing red sandstone fort was also built by Emperor Shah Jahan and served as his home during construction of the Taj Mahal. Today, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and well worth a visit for its architecture and history.

End your day trip with a stop at Fatehpur Sikri, another UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once India’s capital city. Built by Emperor Akbar in the 16th century, Fatehpur Sikri is now a ghost town but still features some incredible buildings including Jama Masjid, one of the largest mosques in India.

Agra Fort

Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Agra, India. The fort is also known as the Red Fort of Agra. It was built by Emperor Akbar in 1565 A.D. and is one of the finest examples of Mughal architecture. The fort is made of red sandstone and is surrounded by a moat. It has two main entrances, the Delhi Gate and the Amar Singh Gate. The fort has numerous palaces, mosques, and gardens within its walls.

The most famous palace in the fort is the Jahangir Palace, which was built by Emperor Jahangir for his beloved wife Nur Jahan. The palace has beautiful inlaid marble work and stunning views of the river Yamuna. Another notable palace is the Khas Mahal, which was used by Emperor Shah Jahan as his personal chambers. It is decorated with delicate floral motifs in white marble. The Diwan-i-Aam is a hall of public audience where the emperor would meet with his subjects. It has a double row of pillars and an ornate roof supported by Hindu-style brackets.

The Rang Mahal was used by the royal ladies of the court and is one of the most beautiful palaces in the fort complex. It has delicate lattice work, minarets, and fountains. The Musamman Burj is a octagonal tower where Emperor Shah Jahan spent his last days gazing at the Taj

Itimad-ud-Daulah’s Tomb

Itimad-ud-Daulah is a mausoleum that was built between 1622 and 1628. It was commissioned by Empress Noor Jahan, the wife of Emperor Jahangir, for her father Mirza Ghiyas Beg. The tomb is situated on the eastern bank of the Yamuna River in Agra, India. The tomb is often described as a “jewel box” because of its extensive use of white marble and its decorative pietra dura inlay work.

The mausoleum has a octagonal shape, with each side measuring 61 feet (19 meters). The exterior is made entirely of white marble, while the interior is decorated with pietra dura inlays of semiprecious stones. The tomb contains numerous chambers, including a main chamber that houses the cenotaphs of Mirza Ghiyas Beg and his wife Asmat Begum. There are also smaller chambrs that contain the cenotaphs of their children.

The tomb complex also includes a mosque and a guest house. The mosque is located to the west of the tomb and has two minarets that rise to a height of 40 feet (12 meters). The guest house is located to the east of the tomb and was used by traveling nobles and dignitaries.

Today, the tomb complex is a popular tourist destination and is one of the most photographed monuments in Agra.

Fatehpur Sikri

Fatehpur Sikri is a UNESCO World Heritage site and was the capital of Mughal Emperor Akbar. The city was built in the 16th century and is home to many well-preserved palaces and mosques. Visitors can explore the intricate architecture and learn about the history of this important city.

Mehtab Bagh

Mehtab Bagh, or “Moonlight Garden”, is a charbagh (a Persian-style quadrangular garden) laid out in the 16th century. It lies on the south bank of the Yamuna River across from the Taj Mahal in Agra, India. The garden is rectangular in shape with pathways that divide it into four equal sections. In each section, there are four octagonal pools with fountains. Mehtab Bagh was created as an extension of the Taj Mahal complex and was meant to be viewed from the mausoleum itself. Unfortunately, the construction of the Yamuna Expressway has disrupted this view.

Mehtab Bagh offers an incredible view of the Taj Mahal at sunset. The best time to visit is during late afternoon so you can watch the sun set behind the magnificent mausoleum. Keep in mind that Mehtab Bagh closes at sunset, so make sure you arrive well before then.
