Once your son’s circumcision takes place, he’ll need time to heal. While waiting for the healing process to begin, there are steps you can take to help speed up his recovery from the procedure.
After your son’s surgery, his penis may appear red and swollen for several days. This is normal and will diminish as his penis heals.
How long will it take to heal?
Circumcision is a relatively minor procedure with a quick recovery period. But it’s essential that you adhere to the doctor’s postsurgical care instructions so your son can heal as quickly and safely as possible.
The healing process typically takes about a week. Your baby may experience some redness and swelling at the incision site, which is normal and will subside within a few days.
If the circumcision was performed with a plastic ring, commonly referred to as a Plastibell, the ring should come off between 7 and 14 days (on average 10).
Your baby can help himself recover from circumcision by washing his incision area with warm water every day. Additionally, apply some antibiotic ointment on his penis every time you change his diaper.
If the incision area becomes extremely red, painful or swollen, it is wise to consult your doctor. They can prescribe pain medications which are highly effective and make the process simpler for both of you.
What should I expect?
When your son is a newborn, they will undergo circumcision in the hospital with anesthetic to minimize any pain. He may also be given acetaminophen for pain relief during and several hours afterward.
Anesthetics may cause a film to form on the tip of your partner’s penis, so apply antibiotic ointment as needed until the film disappears after several days.
Circumcision can result in some minor bleeding which usually resolves within 2-6 weeks. If you notice large blood clots in your child’s diaper or underwear, call us immediately for further instructions.
After your son’s procedure, your doctor will provide instructions on how to care for his penis. Keeping it clean and lubricated with petroleum jelly during recovery will help minimize irritation to his penis.
